Carnivale

CARNIVALE DETAIL

Carnivale is about the expression of self, using costume and party to exhibit who you are and who you want to be. This conflicts with Western society beliefs where modest appearances signify depth of character and that integrity originates from within. Ornamental exteriors are suspect and perceived as shallow. In places like Trinidad or New Orleans, the opposite is valued - there is a power behind personal adornment that addresses the nature of spirit, gender and the making of art.

With CARNIVALE, women's clothes are crocheted into large anthropomorphic gestures. At 7 x 11 x 3 feet, it is an exuberant transcendence that extends out from the wall into your space. The technique is adapted from traditional technique but magnified in scale and materials, transforming meaning and form from the humble beginnings of floral blouses and silk jerseys into a celebration of the self. This piece will be part of the exhibit The Nobility of Things at Fruitlands Museum Art Gallery, June 29-August 18 2013.

Over the next month I'll be adding sneak previews of two shows. Please stay tuned!

High Art

Annually the Attleboro Arts Museum sponsors a show for high school art students. This year each participating high school was asked to work on a collaborative installation to fit a particular site within the museum space. The theme this year is Full Contrast.

A Show of opposites; black & white, light & dark, rough & smooth, right & wrong, good & evil… open to all mediums and concepts that communicate a literal or emotional view of opposing themes.

Eleven schools participated with eleven very original approaches to the idea of contrast. Some literal but most very conceptual conveying ideas about their places in the world. This was a great opportunity for me to witness making and experience some very heartfelt and ernest efforts. I juried the show on Wednesday and I'm still thinking about it today on Friday. The toughest part was having to choose winners.

I knew I was in trouble with this task immediately after making my first pass through. So I decided to only be in the space of one installation at a time and take notes. By the end of eleven installations I was still confused but my notes helped me choose based on how comprehensive the piece was as a whole and how many of the requirements were met.

All the installations were totally impressive and while driving home I almost called the museum several times to change my choices. Here are a few of the installations. I apologize for not having photos of all of them but like I mentioned, I was totally drained by the end of it and wasn't as thorough as usual.

This one is about the schizophrenia of being a teenager in high school.

A conceptual interpretation of positive and negative space.

Left: an elaborate sculpture about good vs. evil.
Right: Inspired by the struggles between the natural and manmade world.

I'm always drawn to themes of growth and decay.

Back: Design students working with size and shape and color in space.
Front: Themes of inner vs. outer beauty.

Left: Growth and decay
Right: Metamorphosis

Morphology

Today we installed MORPHOLOGY at Fountain Street Fine Art. The process always starts out being very overwhelming and confusing but today it ended up looking like poetry. Kay's broad array of encaustics create a magical backdrop to my tactile sculptures. Also, Kay's new encaustic orbs add the perfect whimsy to connect it all.

Come by and see for yourself! Kay happens to be gallery sitting this Thursday, May 23, from 2-5 pm.

Two by Two by Two

A wonderful article in today's Boston Globe about two shows at Fountain Street Fine Art. One that I am in with Kay Hartung and opens next week, MORPHOLOGY.  And one with my two dear friends Lisa Barthelson and Denise Driscoll that is showing now, MATERIALIZE. You can read the article here. Thanks Nancy West!

VAULT, detail - 15x8.5x11 in. - Encaustic, cradled panel, rusted hinge and felted wool

Or better still - MORPHOLOGY - a two person show with Kay Hartung at Fountain Street Fine Art in Framingham from May 23 -June 23 2013. Looking forward to experience the chemistry that happens between my organic sculptures and Kay's cellular renditions. Installing next week. Opens May 23.

VAULT is a new work about the tension between our insides and outsides. Blood, guts and bile with an armor of wax.

Over the next month I'll be adding sneak previews of two shows. Please stay tuned!
